What is underneath matters more than what is on top. What a resin driveway is made of, layer by layer.

1

The ground

Whatever is there now. Soil, clay, forty years of old hardcore. We dig down to something solid and take the rest away, because nothing laid on top can fix what is wrong underneath.

2

A membrane

A geotextile sheet between the ground and the stone. It stops the two working into each other over the years, which is one of the quiet ways a driveway starts to sink.

3

The sub-base

Crushed stone, laid in layers and compacted. This is what actually carries the car. It is also the one part nobody ever sees, which is exactly why it is the part that gets skimped.

4

The base course

Open textured tarmac or concrete, laid level and firm so the resin has something even to bond to. A sound existing drive can sometimes do this job, and if yours can, we will tell you.

5

Resin bound stone

Natural aggregate coated in UV stable resin and trowelled by hand, typically around 18mm deep on a driveway. Water drains straight through it, and a proper kerb holds the edge.

What resin bound is

Resin bound surfacing is a mix of clear UV-stable resin and natural aggregate, trowelled by hand over a prepared base to a smooth, level finish. The stones are fully coated, so the surface is solid underfoot, but there are tiny voids between them, which is why rain drains straight through rather than pooling or running off.

The base is the job

A resin surface is only as good as what is underneath it. We check the existing base before quoting: sound concrete or tarmac can often be overlaid, but a base that has moved or is breaking up gets dug out and rebuilt. Laying over a bad base is a waste of your money, and we will say so.

UV protected, every time

There are two grades of resin. The cheaper aromatic grade yellows in sunlight within a couple of summers. We use the aliphatic grade that holds its colour. It costs more; it is the difference between a driveway that looks right in ten years and one that does not.

Colours and edges

Aggregates run from pale golds through terracotta and reds to charcoal and silver, and can be mixed. Edges are finished against a proper restraint (block, kerb or steel), so the surface has something to hold against and stays crisp.
